Okay.  I don't want to start the kind of ranting and raving that I'm really tempted to do against certain people and things posted on this board in one of the regular forums.  It takes the current events, miscellaneous and opinion forums way off topic and gets those parts of the boards going in a direction that they don't need to take.

I propose that we start a "smoking section" forum where we can get flaming mad without totally taking away from other more worthwhile threads.  I have a feeling that others might enjoy the opportunity to experience some virtual catharsis.

Thoughts?  Approval?  Disapproval?

EXCELLENT Idea!  In addition to "virtual catharsis", it would also give relief from having to read "flames".

Only problem, how do you decide what the standard is for each section--what is considered too controversial, too inflammatory for the "normal"  catagory?  Who decides?  What is the penalty for exceeding the "flame" limit?

Good ideas, both of you. One more thought, maybe moderator could move flaming posts from others and put there if it is not fit to be seen. Are we talking like radio here? If you tune into this station, dont bitch and complain about what is in it? I mean, If you go to this part of the forum, you know what you are getting into?

The message board that spawned this idea, the Straight Dope one (http://www.straightdope.com), did this in a completely open and free forum.  They did post the caveat that if you go in, it's going to be ugly.  It's going to be bad.  There will be inflammatory and controversial statements.  If you don't like it, don't read it.  If you feel the need to dig at others on the board or make a completely ridiculous and inflammatory argument, THIS is the spot to do it.  This would need to be introduced in a moderator's announcement in other forums on this board, and it probably wouldn't hurt to have a warning page the first time that people enter.

I disagree with doing it, I like it the way it is now.  Everyone will have a different idea of what's crossing the line.  Someone might say something in here and I think its ridiculous, and maybe even offensive, others might say they agree completely and have no problem with it.  Clovis, I realize things often get off topic in most threads, I think making it a rule that you couldn't do so would be too strict.  Sometimes its good to get a little off the topic, especially in political threads, where things get complicated and often there's a lot more to the topic than it might seem.

I think its best to let people know if you strongly disagree, or if you think they're being out of line (some users might take that as a compliment).  It doesn't hurt either to remind people to stay on the topic, it's easy to get sidetracked when the thread starts to get boring.  Speaking of which, what does everyone think of the 20 year prison sentences for cannibus? :D

irisheyes - I didn't mean this as a forum to aid censorship.  I brought this up because I really, really just want to let a certain user (no names mentioned) have it full force.  I'd love to start a new thread devoted to just that.  But I don't feel that putting that thread in Current Events, Opinion, or Miscellaneous is appropriate.  It'd draw attention away from other more important topics, and it's just inappropriate to use those forums to make attacks on other users (well, okay - devoting entire threads to making attacks on other users) - in my opinion, at least.  I think this separate forum would be useful to just about everyone at one time or another.

I've tried everything that you've suggested, and unfortunately it just doesn't work, usually.  Sometimes you just need a good online scream...

If all of you people who are complaining about flames and junk on this forum would stop responding to them they would get bored and find another forum to disrupt. Just STOP responding!

I say NO to changing anything about our forum ... no to picking and choosing who can stay and who can't ... no to telling anyone what they can and cannot say ... no to having someone watch over us like we are infants.

Most of us are adults here ... I think you should be able to skim by the scum and talk to whom ever you wish. No one is making you read their posts.

I agree with Spidy THIS FORUM WAS FOUNDED UNDER THE FIRST ADMENDMENT.

It was not long ago that King Gabe had the Albert Lea Tribune Forum plugged pulled and the peasents had no place to gather not until Liberal Hood and his merry men made it possible for the peasents to gather and share their thoughts without retalitaion from King Gabe

Argh.  Please take a read.  What I'm proposing here isn't banning threads... isn't opening another page to send those who have controversial posts (or posts that are objectionable)... just another subdivision of THIS forum.  Like we have a Miscellaneous, Current Events, Opinion section... I think it'd be nice to have another section where we could just START flame threads if need (or want) be.  Ignoring flaming messasges is helping, I agree - I've totally quit trying to rationalize with certain members of the board because "it just ain't gonna happen."  But if I want to flame someone, I don't necessarily think that it's appropriate to put on the board under one of the main topic headings that exists now.  All I'm saying is maybe we should put up a new topic heading for those who might like to use it - NOT that we should send people there like a 2-year old to time-out for material that may be objectionable.

Please don't confuse my proposal with censorship or trying to infringe on free speech.
