I am hoping someone can clear up my confusion about the old high school for me.  I recently got off the phone with my councilman to complain about the condition of the old high school; vandalism, over grown weeds, loitering, etc.  He said that the city has nothing to do with the high school.  I told him that if I let my lawn get over grown to the extent the high school's is, the city would come and mow it for me and then charge me an arm and a leg.  He said I was right.  Shortly after, two people came out and did a horrible job with mowing and trimming down the weeds.
This is where my ignorance comes in: I thought the person who bought the building for a dollar was supposed to begin doing something with the property within one year or it would be turned back over to the city (the building, not the dollar).  Is this true or did I misunderstand?  Who is responsible for the school?  How long will it remain vacant or even standing?  I also heard that there is still too much asbestos in the structure to make tearing it down realistic.
Is there anyone who can clarify this for me?

The school district doesn't care. They got their new cadillac..YOU figure out what to do with the old junker!

Oh...you'll spend millions to tear it down. They couldn't talk about that prior, or you wouldn't have fronted for a new car....dig?

Our city and school board officials need to be held accountable for the empty buildings. NO NEW BUILDINGS UNTIL WE EITHER START RENOVATING OR TEARING DOWN THE OLD ONES. Fair enough. I think so. They wouldn't.......

Gee...hard to believe that the guy could not do anything thing with the building given the outstanding shape some folks think it's in.  The district still has money in reserve to tear it down if they have to.  I'm still waiting for the "they did not need the building" crowd because it's in such great shape to put their money where there mouth is a buy the place and really show us morons that thought it was a piece of crap.

They would have bought the place, but, they were to busy trying to save the '54 building.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I thought that was part of the problem, I read or heard somewhere that the school district had already spent the money. If it is going to demolished, I believe it will have to be the city paying for it. I dont understand that either though, why not make the man that paid a whole 1 dollar bill for it pay to bring it down?

I will take it for $1.00 - with the following conditions:

1- No Property Taxes (or any other taxes come to think of it) for as long as I own the property.
2- No restrictions as to what use I have (meaning all zoning variances given a blanket OK)
3- And if you are feeling generous, I could also use some taxpayer cash to get my project rolling  :p

I got my dollar, what have you got?

First off, no one should have been able to buy the building in the first place without at least some idea or plan for putting it to good use, and salvage is not putting a building to good use.

You are not wrong, just not equiped with all the facts.  The district has about 300,000 in reserve to take down part of the building.  Part of the building could be sold and used.  In fact, I think they had a offer for part of it, but the sale amount plus the 300,000 grand was not enough to tear the rest of it down.

I don't know all the in's and out's of the $1 deal, but it seemed to me that it was a risk unless they got a bunch of cash up front that was committed to the project. I assume, but don't know, they took the risk that if the guy performed they would come out $300,000 ahead.

Guest, I dont doubt that you are right, but I have to ask if you are sure about the 300,000 in reserve. I had heard that yes they DID have that in reserve for that purpose, but have spent some if not most of it. That now if it is to be demolished it would have to be paid for by the city. I may be wrong but I thought I read that in the paper.
