I have a Samsung Galaxy 4, originally it came with Android Jellybean, but in the past week it asked me to update and it changed it over to Android Lollipop.  I can't stand it, it runs a lot slower on apps and I don't like how it looks.

What options are there to downgrade to a previous Android version?  Would I end up losing everything and starting from scratch, or can I save settings and data? :dunno:

What version of lollipop did it install?  When I got the 5.0 version about two months ago i almost threw the phone in the trash (Galaxy S5).  They did a patch to 5.0.1 and fixed a lot of what was wrong.  It was a mess for about 3 days till they came out with that patch.

You'll need to root the phone then install a recovery manager like twrp then follow these instructions. Rooting the S4 isn't real difficult but it will trip the Knox counter and supposedly void the warranty but I've never heard of that happening to anyone. Check the xda S4 thread for your carrier instructions to root.

If you use tmobile I've got a folder with Odin, a rooting script, Twrp, and some 4.xx roms that I could drop on thumb drive for you.

I think I'd follow GIL advice first. Almost every phone I own came out with a .01 update within days of upgrading to 5.0. If that doesn't fix it I'd factory default it next but you'll lose some system data like call logs and txt messages but all your names and numbers should be saved in your google account so they'll come back.

Also there's an app called helium you can use to backup quite a bit on an unrooted phone, then do a factory default and reinstall your backup.

Thanks Guys!  G.I.L., the version of Lollipop is 5.0.1.  I'll wait another week and if there isn't another update or patch that solves it I'll do the factory reset that Lib mentioned.

I did end up switching from T-Mobile to Verizon last year.  I always keep backups of photos and texts, so I won't lose anything.  I hadn't thought of doing the factory reset, that's probably a simpler option since I've never rooted a phone before.
