(St. Paul-AP) -- As the Fourth of July approaches, state fire officials are warning Minnesotans about injuries from fireworks.
Fireworks such as fountains, torches and sparklers were legalized in Minnesota in 2002 -- and since then, the number of fireworks-related injuries in the state is up.
Last year, 91 fireworks injuries were reported in Minnesota. That's more than three times the annual average that had been reported before consumer fireworks were legalized.
While illegal fireworks are still a problem, state Fire Marshal Jerry Rosendahl says the majority of injuries result from the use of legal fireworks.
Rosendahl points out that the burning tip of a sparkler is 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. He says that's something you shouldn't hand to a youngster and then hope for the best.

Ok, maybe I am being over cynical here, but WTF?
Is it not completely obvious that if you legalize anything that was previously illegal you are going to have what they call 'fallout'?
Would it be at all surprising if motorcycles were illegal to ride for say 20 years and then the law was changed that people start getting injured on motorcycles?
This type of 'news' backs up just about each and every complaint that we have read in here about the lousy media and their coverage.

No kidding?!?! Is that why we teach our youth to drive rather than just give them the keys and 'hope for the best'?
Sometime I think we could get better content from monkey's trying to type Shakespeare. 
What's even more disappointing is that this is the Associated Press, there HAS to be something better to write about.

I read that report too and had the same reaction ...
Everytime I turn on the local news and there is bad weather the weather person feels he/she has this great need to remind us to "wear our rain coats", "don't play in lightning", "slow down on icy roads" ... and the list goes on!
Now we have fireworks legalised ... "don't hand explosives to children" ... I don't know, isn't that common sense?

I guess I looked at it differently. I surely think that adults need to be reminded not to hand a sparkler to a 2 yr. old. I have seen it done. Some "so called adults" have no common sense. I have been on cruise ships where 3 yr. olds have been out playing on the deck unsupervised. I have been to parks where the adult will hand food to a toddler and have them try to feed a wild bear so they can take a picture of it. Ever been to a restraurant where a toddler hurls himself into a waitress carrying coffee? Some adults just have no sense at all where children are concerned.

I would agree that common sense isn't all that common these days, but there has to be better 'news' out there than the completely obvious.

The stupidist thing I've saw........A woman at a convenience store lets her kid (mabey 8 or 9) pump gas (which clearly is prohibited,by signage on the pump) anyhoo the kid splashes some gas in his eye, and the woman all in a frenzy tried to rinse it out with windshield wash. (They should'nt let some people out of the house, let alone allow them to have children and drive!!)

Holly short sheets Batman, how did the good Doctor know it wasn't a midget pumping that gas? And windshield wash is good on a lot of things, why it has cleared up my acne and I would recommend it!

A good doctor just knows these things. But hey if it helps your acne go for it. Maybe you could harness the active ingredient and make big bucks on an acne patent!!!!

A good belt sander will take care of acne too, but I wouldn't recommend it.
