AF Airman Pleads Guilty To Rape

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - An airman at the Air Force Academy pleaded guilty to rape on Monday and was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison.
Airman Basic Darwin Paredesillescas of the 10th Air Base Wing was dishonorably discharged, academy officials said. He could have received a sentence of life.
Paredesillescas waived his right to an Article 32 hearing, similar to a civilian preliminary hearing, after he was accused of raping a female airman in February, academy officials said.
Airmen and enlisted personnel at the academy live in dorms and perform a range of jobs from civil engineering to security.
His was the second court-martial on rape charges since a sexual assault scandal erupted at the academy last year. Cadet Douglas L. Meester pleaded guilty in June to a reduced charge of assaulting a fellow cadet in 2002, and was reprimanded and fined.
The academy has overhauled its top leadership and policies on sexual assault after dozens of current and former female cadets complained they were ignored or punished after reporting assaults.
