I was out to the mall earlier this evening. I was feeling a little hungry so I figured I would give Café Don’l a go since I have never eaten there before. So me and a buddy of mine go in there, get seated pretty quickly and get setup with menus and water right away. We look at the menus for 5 minutes if even that and order our food which consisted of 1 bacon cheese burger with fries and a coke and 1 cheddar and mushroom burger with potato wedges and a milk. The server took our order, went back and brought out our drinks right away. Then the eternal wait began. We waited and waited and waited and waited. 30 minutes before our food came out to us. The restaurant was not busy by any means, less than 10 tables in use and most of those tables had already finished their meal and were having coffee. Completely unacceptable service from the kitchen. The wait staff I had not a single problem, they were very attentive and everything. I kinda wonder if the cook didn’t kill the damn cow, go to Wisconsin for the cheese and hand pick the mushrooms from god knows where. Just couldn’t believe that it took that long for a couple of basic burgers. The burger I had wasn’t that good either, it was overly-charred on the outside and not really done on the inside, kind of soft and mushy. I ate it anyway since I waited so long for it though. I don’t know what other people have experienced at this place, but I for one probably won’t be going back.

I don't know if this is still the case, but back when I did eat at Cafe DonLs, the one in the Skyline Mall was MUCH better than the one at Northbridge. I also heard rumors that things cost more at Northbridge, but I cannot prove nor discredit that.

Something is truely wrong. When you are at Cafe Don'L, one is suppose to complain about everything else. That's how Don likes it. That's why nobody has ever complained about kitchen before, they are too busy complaining with Don about this thing or that. I would join in but I find the chairs too damb painful to sit in that long.

Don Speaking (from Albert lea Tribune)
Don asking for Sales Tax so we don't increase property taxes Sales tax officially dies in St. Paul : May 2002 by Masaaki Harada "There is no other way that we can clean up the lakes and watersheds without the sales tax," said Don Sorenson, a member of the Albert Lea Lake Management Committee and Destination: Albert Lea.According to Sorenson, the sales tax is the most acceptable way for the residents to share the expense for the lake, because other methods involve a property-tax increase in one way or another
Don asking for Increase in Property Taxes Lake activists want county to increase 2003 budget for improvements Nov 12 2002 By Masaaki Harada The Lake Restoration Committee, a branch of the Albert Lea/Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce, has asked the county to plan for $350,000 for lake improvement projects in next year's budget, an increase of $75,000 from the county's original plan.Sorenson brought up the option of forming a state-appointed watershed district, warning the county to be open to the public input. "Should efforts stall, the Lake Restoration Committee will not hesitate to refile for a watershed board," he said...The proposal, following a request to the city to budget $150,000 for Fountain Lake, asks the county to carry over excess funds in this year's lake budget to next year.
Don speaking negatively on City Staff Economic development: Some say it works, others disagree Oct 2002 by Peter Cox When Don Sorenson, owner of Cafe Don'L, decided to open a second restaurant at the Northbridge Mall seven years ago, he said his experience in dealing with city inspectors was negative..."If I had known what a problem expanding my business would be," Sorenson said. "I would have walked out half way through the project."
Don speaking negatively on the residents of Albert Lea Panel urges unity, understanding Dec 2002 By Peter Cox, Don Sorenson, owner of two "Don'L" restaurants, said that the town of Albert Lea isn't always positive about itself. "This is one hell of a negative town," Sorenson said. "We've got to do something about changing the attitude of the community."
Don speaking on new vs remodeling (1954 Building) Defenders of '54 building speak out June 13 2002 by Masaaki Harada "It's not designed to be an efficient office building," said activist Don Sorenson, who has advocated tearing down the building. "Remodeling would never be cheap."Sorenson thinks the enhanced efficiency of the new space will pay off any extra cost, even if the demolition option does require more dollars than the remodeling.
Don speaking to tear down the 1954 building to attract people Lower price hinges on extent of remodeling June 18 2002 Masaaki Harada Sorenson also suggested the removal will enhance the presence of the 1888 old courthouse as a downtown icon. "If we don't attract people to the community, we are going to have a dead community," he said.
Don speaking on Courthouse funding $25.7 million project County finalizes courthouse funding Published: Sep 2002 by Masaaki Harada "We spent a long time on this," business owner Don Sorenson added. "A lot of time and a lot of input. I don't think we can afford not to do this, wasting another two or three years."

The reason it's VERY difficult to start new businesses in AL is because years ago it was established (by the old gaurd) that new businesses cause unwanted competition and anything the city can do to get in the way is good and exceptable. Just look at how difficult it is to get even a drivers license, yet Springborg says he likes it that way because his says they are thorough.
I would NEVER start a business in Al unless I was Rick Hoffman and wanted Sparks to help me open a hog kill.

How come Don Sorensen watershed board member hasn't proposed this tax for cleaning the lakes.?? Is it because he owns restaurants ??
January 6th, 2004
Chamber may propose food, drink tax Funds could build trails, fields By Tim Krohn
Free Press Staff Writer MANKATO — A proposed 2 1/2 percent local sales tax on food, beverages and entertainment would generate some $3 million a year in Mankato that could be used for things like new soccer fields, bike trails, parking spaces or an arts center.
The Greater Mankato Chamber of Commerce is still deciding whether to endorse the tax, which is being met skeptically by many bar and restaurant owners. If enacted, the tax would be collected and controlled by the city. Other cities in Blue Earth and Nicollet counties could enact a similar tax that they would control.... Mankato City Manager Pat Hentges told City Council members at a work session Monday night that focusing the tax on entertainment-related businesses makes sense.....
While the Legislature must give its approval first, it’s not clear if there would have to be a local referendum to implement the tax or if it could simply be approved by the council. Hentges said the St. Cloud City Council implemented the local tax without a referendum.
Please educate us Mayor Jean You might be able to ram it though without a vote

From the official meeting notices
The Shell Rock River Watershed Board of Managers will convene for a Special Meeting on Monday, January 5, 2004 at 7:30 a.m. at Don L's, Northbridge Mall, 2510 Bridge Ave., Albert Lea, Minnesota at which time the following matters will come before them as well as other general items which might be presented but are unknown at this time.
MEETING NOTICE & AGENDA
SHELL ROCK RIVER WATERSHED DISTRICT BOARD OF MANAGERS Tuesday, September 23, 2003, 6:30 a.m. Don L's, Northbridge Mall Northbridge Mall 2510 Bridge Ave., Albert Lea, Minnesota
I suppose Don doesn't profit in any way because they don't eat or drink like Gabe, Behrends and the Janitor did at BKV party.
State law prohibits Don with conflict of interest rules from profiting because he's on a watershed board. I'm sure the Watershed Board would go to Don'ls even if he wasn't on the watershed board ........................or would they???
Oh well money down the river and water over the dam damn !!!

I, on the other hand, have had excellent food at the Cafe Don L. Friends, hubby and I like to congregate there on Sunday mornings for breakfast. Personally, I have never met Mr. Sorenson, but his wife is very pleasant. And by the way, if you want to harm his business... then badmouth it. Oh come on, it is obvious, Mr. Sorenson, has rubbed a few folks the wrong way in this town because he is not a hypocrite and speaks his mind. I believe that many of the ghost writing posters on this site have alternate agendas. How insidious to post as someone totally different than who you actually are. And what better way to bring down this forum than to contribute as a dope smokin. drug runnin, Jerry Springer wanna be guest homeboy? I mean, come on, if everyone sounded intelligent and factual, people in Albert Lea may even listen to ones point of view, and this site might get some respect.
