The Senate just passed an anti-spam bill--
Quote
The U.S. Senate voted Tuesday for a historic antispam bill, capping more than six years of failed congressional attempts to enact a federal law restricting unsolicited commercial e-mail.
I don't know of any of us that LIKES to get spam, but critics of the bill raise legitimate points.  They say that there are so many loopholes in the bill that it will be ineffective--that the bill can't prohibit foreign spammers, moving more jobs offshore--that there will be another government agency "staying busy NOT stopping SPAM".

That brings up the poll question--is SPAM effective?  It must be, as companies continue to use it.  Your thoughts?

Good topic. When I first started marketing my business, I looked into spam at a time I was naive to what it was all about. After researching for many hours, I found some interesting statistics. This is how spamming works (in my experience and studies.)

In order to spam, you must have email addresses to send to. Thus, there are companies that find email addresses, combine those addresses into lists, then sell these lists to just about anyone with a buck.

After looking into the cost of this, I found the following.

Let's say I want to buy a list of email addresses. I can buy a cd-rom with 500,000 addresses for about $500.

Now I send spam to all the addresses. Let's say that 10% of those people actually take the time to read my spam. That's 50,000 that read my spam. Of those 50,000 I sell a $20 product to 10% of those readers.

That's 5000 people multiplied by $20 or $10,000

Bottom line....if 1% of the people I send spam to buys something, I  make money.

After learning more about it, I decided not to use spam, but if you notice on Freeborncounty.com, you can sign up for "site update emails". I found it works best if someone "asks" to be put on the list. The problem with that is sometimes people send me someone elses email.

All in all, spam is a nuisance, but someone is making money off it, or they obviously wouldn't do it.

It's just sad that people waste their time on these things, when they could be losing 30 lbs in 30 days, turning their life around by buying books on government loan programs, buying real estate with no money down, and increasing their 'member' size 3 inches or more to satisfy all the beauties who want you to chat with them at their websites.

And don’t forget about helping out those poor Nigerians to move all those millions out of their country, for which you will get a handsome reward by simply giving them access to your bank accounts and a few thousand to ‘bribe’ some officials!

Could this be how minnow makes all his millions???

Hanna, now we know why you're not in the same income range as Minnow! :D   5,000 x $20=$100,000 :D

All direct marketers work on a very small percentage of the total populace.  Printed a mailed direct mail considers anything over 1% return as great, but unlike SPAMMERS, print direct mail has to pay printing and postage costs.  I would guess that SPAMMERS actually get less than 1/2% return, but with their negligible costs, they come out very well.

That's a good point you make on your website--E-mail updates.  I saw your "Bulldog" ad for the restaurant/bar in Clarks Grove a while ago, and it reminded me that I wanted to stop in and see what they had to offer.  Did the ad directly cause me to go there?  No, but I wouldn't have gone if I hadn't seen the ad.  In that case, the ad was effective.
