1. State Auditor Patricia Anderson Releases Report on Local Government Lobbying Services

State Auditor Patricia Anderson released a report today on the lobbying expenditures of Minnesota local governments in 2003. The report, 2003 Local Government Lobbying Services, includes information on the lobbying expenditures of local governments and local government associations. Minnesota state law directs the Auditor’s Office to prepare the report annually.

According to the reports filed with the State Auditor’s Office, local governments spent a total of $6,082,003 on lobbying activities in 2003, a 12.7 percent increase from the amount spent in 2002.

Local governments spent $2.9 million on staff and contract lobbyists in 2003, a 3.3 percent decrease from 2002. In addition to directly employing and contracting with lobbyists, local governments receive lobbying services through associations of local government. Local government associations spent $3,181,885 on lobbyists and lobbying in 2003, an increase of 33 percent over 2002.

Lobbying expenditures by associations of local governments have increased 69 percent over the last five years.

A full PDF copy of the report is available online at http://www.auditor.state.mn.us.

We've created a monster. It's proof that government wants to grow on its own...be it's own entity.

It is an interesting read, I was was surprised to read the list of local units that belong to 5 or more lobby groups.

I can tell you this, the rural folks are out gunned and out spent.

Belshan and kid tnt are full of cow chips...

If the Association of Minnesota Counties and other lobbies like the Transportation Alliance and City lobbies did not exist, the outstate areas would be in deep doodoo!

The money needs to be spent by our local governments to have organized fronts to keep things fair.

It's a fact of political life, people.

Ask repdan --- we ARE being outspent by metro and the MICA counties, for example...

I didn't take time to read all of this, but I did read something off of secretary of state website that said the counties with the biggest cut of the money was Ramsey and Hennepin counties.  Rural counties were nominal in comparison.

Since 1/4 of the people in the state live in Hennepin County, this should not be of a surprise.
