The RIAA is attempting to file suit against people that have downloaded music for free from sources like Napster and Kazza, search for your name here.

Ole1, dont want to totally disagree with you, but, they are going after the people that make the songs available for download. At least right now its just people that are sharing lots of files, not going after people just yet for just downloading. I do want to ask if people think the penalty is fair, I dont. Even if you consider downloading free music stealing(I dont), is it fair to charge the people sharing music 750 to 150,000 dollars for each file or song? Come on, we are talking about something that runs what, 15 bucks at the store? What gets me is that I would bet that almost all of these people in the industry, if they werent in the industry, would be downloading files themselves. The thing they dont get is just because you stop me from downloading doesnt mean I am going to start buying your product. As a matter of fact, this is going to turn into a public relations nightmare for them, in my opinion. I mean, if they get someone with a 1000 songs, the minimum fine is 750,000 dollars, they start showing people losing there homes because there 13 year old was sharing files I think they will wish they hadnt went to these extremes to get their money.
Hey RIAA  :finger:  Thats what I think of your tactics.  One last thing for anyone out there that does consider it stealing. Do you realize that if you have ever recorded a movie or TV show on your VCR, you have done the same thing these people have done. So, if you have never done that and you want to call it stealing, fine. But if you have, shut the hell up, you aint any beeter than someone downloading songs.

L.A. news just reported that a New York mother was the first to settle with the RIAA since the suits were filed yesterday. She settled with the RIAA for $2,000 because her 12 year old daughter had been downloading music.  They said less than 10 suits have been settled so far.

Whats next though, Ford sues me because I let someone borrow my f150 instead of making them go out and buy one. You buy a DVD and let a friend borrow it(share it), they gonna come after you? Screw these people, it will be a cold day in hell before I buy any more of their products.

Actually, most people that use programs to search for music to download are sharing files also. Most of these programs have settings that automatically turn the user's pc into a node (or super node) while that program is running so that any files they have already downloaded are being shared.
While most of these programs have settings in their preferences to turn this feature off, not all people realize this or understand how to turn it off.
I am not real sure how the RIAA is able to sue the parents though, wouldn't accepting the terms of the software actually be entering into a contract, something that usually is used to get a case thrown out of court since it is unlawful for a minor to engage in a legally binding contract.
Also, if the RIAA is going to sue people that download the music and people that create file sharing programs/networks, then shouldn't they start going after each and every company that manufactures CD burners, how about the old dual tape deck dubbing systems?
It seems to me that the RIAA is just trying to single people out to sue to fill their own coffers, and they are being allowed to get away with it.

You are right Ole1, I have used Kazaa, but only share 2 files when I am there. O yes, I feeel so sorry for those poor recording artists, they might actually have to sell a home or two if people are listening to their music for free. Copy right laws are way out of line, thankfully a judge just threw out a lawsuit by Fox News against Al Franken for using the words fair and balanced in his book title. Anyway, the music industry is blaming lagging CD sales on file sharing, how about the fact that I dont want to buy a CD with a dozen songs on it, and only 2 are worth paying for. Give me a system were I can pay the regular price for a CD, but I choose the songs, and I can fill my CD, most times I can get 15 to 18 songs on a CD. But like I said, tell me that M&M wouldnt be downloading songs for free if he werent in the industry. I aint seen any of em in the poor house because of file sharing, some of them should be glad that their music is even being listened to. By the way, the movie industry tried to do the same thing when beta and vhs were first sold for the home. It didnt work then, I think it will back fire on this industry as well.
