I had to disable the ability to use an offsite image for an avatar. The forum program isn't smart enough to check the file size making it possible to use really large images as avatars. This tends to slow down the forum for dial up users and increases bandwidth usage.
If you were using an offsite avatar and want to continue to use it just save it to your computer and then upload it to the forum using your avatar settings in control panel this way the forum will verify the filesize of your avatar.
