FERGUS FALLS, Minn. -- A New York Mills man was sentenced Friday for what prosecutors believe to be his 25th drunken driving conviction.
Daniel Bettcher, 51, was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison by District Judge Thomas Stringer, said Otter Tail County Assistant County Attorney Kurt Mortenson.
Mortenson said the man ``has used a number of aliases,'' including Daniel Boettcher, which had made it difficult to determine the exact number of prior convictions.
The name on the paperwork that will go to the Minnesota Department of Corrections is ``Daniel Bettcher,'' Mortenson said.
Mortenson said the state had asked for a slightly stiffer sentence while Bettcher's public defender asked for less jail time, arguing that Bettcher had not been offered chemical dependency treatment in the past.
Stringer did not agree. He said that Bettcher not only has been offered treatment, but was ordered to complete the program for past alcohol-related convictions.
Bettcher also was fined $4,200.
In the latest case, Mortenson said, Bettcher was drinking in a local bar and bragging that he wouldn't be caught if he drove his motorcycle while drunk.
Someone in the bar called police, who said they pulled Bettcher over in Ottertail after watching him drive erratically, Mortenson said.
Authorities said at the time that when Bettcher was asked how much he had to drink, he said, ``too much to be driving.''
Bettcher's blood-alcohol content was measured at 0.23 percent. The legal limit is 0.10 percent.
Bettcher also served time for a DUI conviction in Nebraska in 2001.

Maybe it was just a responsible bartender or someone else that understands the dangers of drunk driving. (in case you weren't aware... nice drunk drivers destroy as many innocent lives as the jerks do.)

How can anyone get 25 DUI's? After the third one don't you lose your lic? I would think after the sixth? one you would be in jail. I don't understand our system.
If he was that drunk that someone called him in the bartender should have taken his keys. Glad he was caught and they are FINALLY going to do something about him.
Anyone who gets behind the wheel when drunk is a jerk.

I heard you get a special license plate if you get X amount of DUIs or if you have children with you if you get a DUI. Does anyone know the law about this?

Yeah cwolff--it's true.
I think if the plate begins with WX, WY, or WZ (WZ for sure), you have a past DUI or more on your record. That way, the authorities can identify you immediately when you are behind the wheel and keep an eye on you.
There is a scarlet letter, minnow!
